osCommerce as a FREE shopping cart
osCommerce (goes for Open Source Commerce) has always been a free shopping cart and Ecommerce solution. Starting from the very beginning back in 2000.
Being free and open source, it was a natural choice for thousands of online merchants and Ecommerce developers when building new online shops.
Being free and not having a proper commercial strategy behind it, resulted in osCommerce not being actively developed between 2010 and 2021.
In 2021 osCommerce was acquired by Holbi - a long time partner and supporter of osCommerce. Being a leading Ecommerce development and consulting agency, Holbi's approach is to make osCommerce a mainstream Ecommerce platform again, and a solution that can benefit merchants' online businesses and at the same time allow Ecommerce developers to be well paid by providing osCommerce development services.
In 2022 osCommerce v4 is to be launched in July. osCommerce App Shop is to go live as well, although apps are to be added in the next few months.
How does it all work then and will osCommerce continue to be free?
The answer is "YES!". osCommerce has always been and will be free.
osCommerce can be enhanced by osCommerce Apps and extensions, downloaded from the App Shop. osCommerce welcomes developers and designers to submit their Apps and Design Templates into the App Shop, to offer them to the merchants for free or at a price.
osCommerce welcomes developers and consultants willing to offer migration, customisation, integration, hosting, support, and other services to the merchants.
Having osCommerce as a FREE shopping cart is essential for the philosophy of Holbi and of the osCommerce community. Being able to offer paid products and services, creating a proper osCommerce marketplace is essential to support the individuals and teams involved with osCommerce as its developers, consultants, and many more.
We are looking forward to a successful journey with the new osCommerce v4, powered by its free and open source spirit!
